Teeth wear down over time and become more susceptible to damage and decay. Unfortunately, this can eventually lead to tooth loss. If this happens, there are several methods available for restoring missing teeth. Dentures, also known as prosthetics, are one of the most common dental devices used.
Dentures are removable prosthetic teeth that are designed to replace missing teeth and the surrounding tissue, restoring both the appearance of the smile as well as the teeth’s functionality. Complete and partial dentures can be made, depending on the severity of the tooth loss; partial dentures can be used if most of the natural teeth still remain while complete dentures replace all the teeth. A benefit to using partials is that they prevent the remaining teeth from shifting along the gum line.
The process for getting dentures takes several appointments. Highly accurate molds and measurements must be taken of your mouth in order to create the custom dentures. Several “try-in” appointments may be necessary for your dentist to adjust the dentures for the right shape, color, and fit.
New dentures may feel awkward for a while and cause irritation, soreness, and/or increased saliva flow. As your mouth becomes more comfortable with the dentures, however, these issues should go away. You’ll still need to clean your mouth daily, as well as the dentures, to maintain a good condition.
