Dental bridges are made up of abutment teeth – crowns fitted onto teeth on either side of a gap – that support the pontic, or false tooth (or teeth). In addition to restoring the appearance of a patient’s smile, dental bridges help maintain the face’s natural shape and restore chewing and speaking abilities. They also keep the remaining natural teeth from shifting into the gap in the teeth.
The abutment teeth are first prepared with the procedure for receiving a crown. An impression is then made of the teeth, which is used to create the bridge. A second appointment will be necessary to get the bridge placed and bonded. If properly maintained, dental bridges can last 5-15 years or longer.
