Gum Disease

Gum disease is a serious condition that needs urgent attention. It can lead to loose teeth or lost teeth, bad breath, oral infection and other health issues, some of which are very serious.

Bacteria builds up a structure that builds up over time, called plaque. When plaque starts to get below the gums, it can infect the gums, leading to gum disease. A professional cleaning can clean below the gum line to remove plaque, tartar, and other debris that are the source of an infection.

Other health issues that can arise from gum disease:

  • Tooth decay
  • Oral infections
  • Infections of the mouth
  • Diabetes
  • Heart issues
  • Stroke
  • Respiratory illness

Gum disease treatment

There are nonsurgical and surgical treatments for gum disease.

Nonsurgical treatments include professional dental cleaning, scaling and root planing. With scaling and root planing, you will receive a local anesthesia since this cleaning goes below the gum line for a more thorough cleaning of tartar and plaque.

One surgical treatment is flap surgery, in which the dentist make a small cut and pulls the gum out to easily remove debris. Other surgical interventions include bone and soft tissue grafts, which are guided tissue regeneration procedures used when the bone supporting your teeth has been destroyed.

What should you do about gum disease when you aren’t at the dentist? If you’re worried about gum disease, there are really only a few things you can do on your own:

  • Use a mouthwash that treats gingivitis, morning and night
  • Brush and floss twice daily

If you need treatment for gum disease in Ajax, discuss it with your dentist and find out what treatment is right for you.
