Dental Implants

If you lose a tooth — whether to decay, periodontitis, or an accident — an implant is one of your best options for replacement. We always recommend implants when possible.

Advantages of Implants

Implants have several advantages over the traditional options of dentures and bridges. First, they appear and feel more natural. This helps with eating, speaking, and self-confidence. They are also more comfortable, eventually feeling just like one of your teeth.

Another advantage is better oral health. Dental implants require no extra attention — you treat the artificial tooth just like a normal tooth. With the right care, your implant can last your whole life.

The Procedure

We personalize all denture treatment plans to meet individual patients’ needs. If any of the original tooth remains, treatment will start with extracting this tooth. The next stage depends on the condition of your jawbone. You may need a bone graft to strengthen it and stimulate new growth.

Once your jawbone is strong enough, surgery for the implant can begin. The implant is a titanium post, which we insert into your jaw. This needs to fuse to the bone, which occurs in a healing process that can take anywhere from six to 12 weeks.

We must attach an abutment to the implant before we can fit the artificial tooth. This requires another surgery. We then take an impression of your teeth to create the replacement tooth. You will return to the clinic when it is ready for fitting.

Coping with the Surgery

Although receiving an implant involves an extensive process, most patients experience only minor discomfort. You will receive a local anesthetic at every stage and can take over-the-counter medication to ease pain after surgery. You will need to eat only soft foods during recovery time, but as soon as everything is healed, you can eat as normal.
