Canker sores and cold sores
Canker sores and cold sores are common conditions seen at Wyndham Manor Dental Care. If you have ever had a canker sore or cold sore you know that they can be quite painful and make eating and even speaking painful or difficult.
What’s the difference between a canker sore and a cold sore?
Canker sores are also known as aphthous ulcers and are small lesions that develop on the inside of the mouth. Cold sores are a viral infection that occurs on or around the lips. The exact cause of canker stores may vary while cold stores are always caused by a herpes simplex virus and can spread easily to others.
Though only cold stores are contagious, both conditions can worsen if left untreated. Some people have recurring cold stores and others are prone to developing canker sores, particularly those on certain types of medication or undergoing orthodontic care.
Dr. Yao and his team at Wyndam Manor Dental Care can treat cold and canker stores as well as help you prevent the conditions from reoccurring with a number of treatment options including:
- Oral rinses
- Topical treatments
- Oral medication
- Cauterization of canker sores (not an option for cold sores)
In addition to treating your cold sore or canker sores, Dr. Yao will perform a complete oral exam and inquiry about your oral and overall health history to help determine the best prevention plan to keep these painful conditions from returning. If you are a resident in the Ajax area suffering from painful or frequent cold sores or canker sores, contact Dr. Yao and his expert dental team at Wyndam Manor Dental Care to schedule an appointment today.
